How to Use, Specification and Saftey Information
Product: Polyurethane Varnish Stain
Type: A high build, air-drying coloured polyurethane. The finish produced is tough, durable and resistant to oil, water and many chemicals.
Intended Use: Bare wood, Hardboard, MDF, unsealed cork. Interior use only. For floors, use Rustins Polyurethane Floor Sealer.
Special Features: Stains and Varnishes in one. High abrasion and mechanical impact resistance.
Colours available: Mahogany, Oak, Dark Oak, Pine, Teak, Walnut and Antique Pine.
Preparation: The surface must be clean, smooth, sound, dry and free from wax, dust and contaminants. Remove wax by rubbing with White Spirit and a plastic souring pad and wipe away whilst still wet. Cracks may be filled with Rustins Woodstopping.
Application: Apply evenly, finishing in the direction of the grain using a good quality brush. The first coat may be thinned with White Spirit (1 part to 8 parts varnish), to act as a sealer when applying to absorbent surfaces.
Coats: 2 coats are usually sufficient on wood. Cork and more absorbent surfaces will require extra coats.
Drying Time: Touch dry in approximately 2-4 hours, depending on the temperature and humidity.
Re-coating Time: Re-coat when the previous coat is hard dry, typically within 4-8 hours depending on the temperature and humidity.
Application Temp: Ideally 15-25 degree C. Do not use below 10 degree C or in conditions of high humidity.
Coverage: 14-16 sq.m per litre, 1 coat, depending on the absorbency of the surface.
Maintenance: The varnish will take about 24 hours to dry fully. Afterwards, the surface may be kept clean by wiping with a mild detergent solution when necessary. To restore the gloss, a wax polish may be applied. Worn areas may be re-coated once cleaned, dewaxed and lightly sanded to provide a key.
Compatibility:The varnish may be used over the following Rustins products; Woodstopping, Grainfiller, Rustins Polyurethane Varnish. This material is not a paint and the colour will darken with additional coats. A lighter shade can be obtained by diluting with White Spirit. Rustins Polyurethane Clear Varnish may be applied over Varnish Stain without altering the colour.
Important: If any other products are used, such as timber treatments, which may contain wax, these must be tested first for compatibility. Old existing coatings may be successfully re-coated with Rustins Polyurethane Varnish once the surface has been thoroughly cleaned, dewaxed and lightly sanded to provide a key.
Settlement: STIR WELL BEFORE USE. Satin and Matt finishes may dry glossy if not thoroughly stirred.
Shelf-life/Storage: Many years in normal conditions, if stored in original, tightly closed container.
