How to Use, Specification and Saftey Information
Product: Polyurethane Varnish
Type: A high build, air-drying polyurethane. The finish produced is tough, durable and resistant to oil, water and many chemicals.
Intended Use: Hardboard, MDF, old concrete, unsealed cork. Interior use only. For floors, use Rustins Polyurethane Floor Sealer.
Special Features: Will enhance the colour of bare wood. May be applied over old existing coatings, but not over wax.
Preparation: The surface must be clean, smooth, sound, dry and free from wax, dust and contaminants. Remove wax by rubbing with White Spirit and a plastic souring pad and wipe away whilst still wet. Cracks may be filled with Rustins Wood stopping. Bare wood may be dyed before coating with Rustins Wood Dye.
Application: Apply evenly, finishing in the direction of the grain using a good quality brush. When applying the varnish over Wood Dye, avoid over brushing the first coat as the dye may tend to lift. The first coat may be thinned with White Spirit (1 part to 8 parts varnish), to act as a sealer when applying to absorbent surfaces.
Coats: 2 coats are usually sufficient on wood. Cork and more absorbent surfaces will require 3 coats.
Drying Time: Touch dry in approximately 2-4 hours, depending on the temperature and humidity.
Re-coating Time: Re-coat when the previous coat is hard dry, typically within 4-8 hours depending on the temperature and humidity.
Application Temp: Ideally 15-25 degree C. Do not use below 10 degree C or in conditions of high humidity.
Coverage: 14-16 sq.m per litre, 1 coat, depending on the absorbency of the surface.
Maintenance: The varnish will take about 24 hours to dry fully. Afterwards, the surface may be kept clean by wiping with a mild detergent solution when necessary. To restore the gloss, a wax polish may be applied. Worn areas may be re-coated once cleaned, dewaxed and lightly sanded to provide a key.
Compatibility: The varnish may be used over the following Rustins products. Woodstopping, Grainfiller, Wood Dye and Floor Dye. May also be used over these Rustins products. Polyurethane Varnish Stain, Colorglaze, Teak Oil and Danish Oil.
Important: If any other products are used, such as timber treatments, which may contain wax, these must be tested first for compatibility. Old existing coatings may be successfully recoated with Rustins Polyurethane Varnish once the surface has been thoroughly cleaned, dewaxed and lightly sanded to provide a key.
Settlement: STIR WELL BEFORE USE. Satin and Matt finishes may dry glossy if not thoroughly stirred.
Shelf-life/Storage: Many years in normal conditions, if stored in original, tightly closed container.
Hazards: Flammable. Keep out of reach of children. Keep away from sources of ignition-no smoking. Avoid contact with eyes and skin, Use only in well ventilated areas. A full Health & Safety Data Sheet is available upon request.
