How to Use, Specification and Saftey Information
Product: Knotting & White Knotting
Type: Rustins Knotting is based on pure shellac and alcohol; it is naturally brown in colour. White Knotting is also available which is made with bleached shellac.
Intended Use:For application to bare wood. Clean knots prior to priming/painting. To prevent discolouration of paint film. Generally used with oil-based paints.
Important: Knotting is only for Paint finishes. Do not use Knotting if wood is to be dyed, stained, varnished or if using other clear coatings or fence & shed treatments. Some water-based paints do not require Knotting. Check the label.
Special Features: Fast drying. Prevents discolouration of Paints. Interior or Exterior use.
Preparation: The surface must be clean, bare and sanded smooth. Clean off any excess resin using white spirit and allow to dry. A heat gun may be used (taking care not to char the wood) to draw-out excess resin, then scrape away. If there are cracks or holes around the knot, fill with Rustins Woodstopping, allow to dry, and sand smooth prior to applying Knotting.
Application: Using a brush apply Knotting liberally over the knot and surrounding area.
Coats: Apply 2 coats. Do not sandpaper knotting.
Re-coating: Time Allow 1 hour between coats and before applying Primer.
Application Temp: Ideally 15-25 degree C. Do not use below 10 degree C or in conditions of high humidity.
Coverage: 10-12 sq.m per litre, 1 coat, depending on the absorbency of the surface.
Compatibility: Most types of wood primers may be applied over Knotting, including Rustins Wood Primer (Pink, White and Aluminium) and Rustins Quick Drying Primer and Undercoat. If the knot needs filling, apply Rustins Woodstopping and sand smooth before applying Knotting.
Settlement: Shake well before use.
Shelf-life/Storage: Many years if stored in original, tightly closed container in normal conditions.
Hazards: Flammable. A full Safety Data Sheet is available on request.
Clean-Up: Use Methylated Spirits to clean brushes (even if dry/hard).
Removal: Knotting may be removed using a liquid paint stripper such as Rustins Strypit Paint and Varnish Stripper.
Note: White Knotting is not pigmented white, it is made from bleached shellac and is almost colourless compared with standard Knotting, which is naturally brown in colour. If White Knotting is used it will take less coats of paint or undercoat to hide it, this is only relevant if white or pastel coloured paints are being used. It may also be used under Rustins White Haze Colorglaze.
Sizes: 125ml 250ml and 1litre.
