Description and explanation of this repair
Thermostat housing are infamous for failing on Mini's. They are positioned at the rear of the cylinder head with five pipes and 2 electrical connectors attached to it.
They are constructed of plastic and are very prone to cracking at their joints. The results of this cracking is you will loose coolant and consequently will over heat the engine.
Over heating the engine can blow a head gasket, make the pistons rings go tight and result in low compression and in extreme cases low oil pressure resulting in a seized crankshaft.
If your Mini displays an over heating symbol on your dashboard you must stop driving it immediately and get it recovered to us.
This is a very difficult and time consuming task and on technician with experience and skill can do it in the time we specify.
Another reason to change thermostat is it's opening and closing is controlled by the cars computer. If this is the case it must be changed as the car has to be cooled by the fan on the radiator at the correct temperature. If the wax stat has failed on the thermostat the cooling will be incorrect and more than likely at a much higher temperature than it should be.
The reason o change the pipe is as follows. If our thermostat has fails it will not be long soon afterwards or at the same time this pipe will. When removing the thermostat housing this pipe come out of the water pump housing the flange will be broken. If the flange is broken you will loose coolant and soon overheat.
The pipe breaks at the flange where the o-ring to seal it to the water pump is. We always recommend you change this at the same time as you change your thermostat regardless if it is broken or not.
