In 1924 Sidney Rustin opened his first shop in London's Shoreditch district where he sold wood finishing products to local residents and trades people.
Sidney's father was a cabinetmaker and his mother funded the business venture. During the second world war the first night raid destroyed the original 1932 factory and the business moved to its present location in Cricklewood, London.
Rustins also exports to more than 20 countries.
Rustins formulated its Strypit paint remover in 1947 and demand remains high. RUSTINS was the first manufacturer of Danish Oil which remains a famous and popular product.
Today Rustins continues its research and development efforts on its core markets of wood finishing, specialty paint and decorating. WOOD DYE - For use on bare wood prior to finishing with any of Rustins wood finishes.
Quick drying penetrating stain, does not raise the grain.
Supplied in 11 shades, which may be intermixed to make an infinite variety of natural wood shades. Suitable for interior and exterior use.
How to Use, Specification and Saftey Information
Product: Wood Dye
Type: Organic and inorganic pigments and binders, dispersed in hydrocarbon solvent.
Intended Use: For application to all types of bare wood, new and stripped, interior and exterior. The dye must be over-coated/sealed.
Special Features: 11 natural wood shades, which can be inter-mixed. Non-fading. Non-bleeding. Does not raise the grain of the wood. Quick drying. Conforms to Safety of Toys Regulations BS EN 71 Part 3 1995.
Note: The final colour achieved depends on the original colour of the wood and the type of coating/finish applied over the dye.
Preparation: Wood must be clean, dry and free of wax and contaminants.
Application: Using a rag, apply an even, wet coat and wipe off any excess. The result will be much darker on softwoods than on hardwoods. For a lighter shade, dilute with White Spirit, 2 parts dye to 1 part White Spirit.
Coats: Usually 1 application is sufficient, or 2 for a darker colour.
Drying Time: 1-2 hours under normal conditions, depending on the absorbency of the wood.
Re-coating Time: 2-4 hours typically, but preferably overnight if applying acrylic water-based varnishes.
Application Temp: Ideally 15-25C.
Coverage: Up to 24 sq.m per litre, 1 coat, depending on the absorbency of the wood.
Compatibility: Can be used under all Rustins wood finishes, i.e. acrylic and polyurethane varnishe s, Plastic Coating, Danish Oil and Teak Oil, French Polish/Shellac. Can be mixed with Rustins Polyurethane Varnish and Polyurethane Varnish Stain, Danish Oil and Teak Oil at up to 20. Also with Plastic Coating at low conc. 5 (test first). However, the best result is achieved by application of dye to bare wood.
Incompatibility: Cannot be mixed with Rustins Acrylics, French Polish and Shellac. Wax Finishes Dyed wood must be sealed before waxing, using Rustins Shellac Sanding Sealer.
Settlement: SHAKE AND STIR WELL BEFORE USE.
Special note: To ensure the correct shade is obtained, it is advisable to stir the contents at the bottom of the container then shake well before use. If more than one container is to be used, these must be mixed together before use, to ensure no variation in shade.
Shelf-life/Storage: Many years if stored in original, tightly closed container, in a cool dry place.
Hazards: Flammable. Harmful. May cause lung damage if swallowed. Keep out of reach of children. Use only in well ventilated areas. If swallowed do not induce vomiting; seek medical advice immediately and show the container. Keep away from sources of ignition. A full Health & Safety Data Sheet is available upon request.
Clean-Up: Equipment can be cleaned using White Spirit.
